This is not a post about writing, but more of a follow up to yesterday’s post about crowdfunding. Crowdfunding on platforms like Kickstarter is gaining a lot of attention from hugely successful projects like the Veronica Mars Movie Project (that I backed yesterday). In less than 24 hours, the project reached its $2 million goal and has now (as of writing this) passed $3 million. It was only a matter of time before Browncoats all over the world started questioning the viability of such an option to fund another Firefly movie.
In an interview with BuzzFeed Entertainment, Joss Whedon addressed the amount of pressure on him to consider it. Definitely go check out his direct answer, but there are things that Whedon fans already know stand in his way. He’s a busy guy with his Marvel movies. He still hasn’t found time to do Dr. Horrible 2. He’s currently touting his version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. When would he find the time?
Also, the production for a sci-fi movie like a follow up to Serenity would cost more money than one like Veronica Mars. While Whedon talks about how costs for effects has decreased since making Serenity, it still would require a lot more money. One thing is for sure in the interview, and that’s that Whedon is already feeling the pressure. Don’t worry, Browncoats. He’s very much aware…and wary.
On a personal note, I’ve talked before about how it might be possible to bring Firefly back. But let’s consider how many characters the creator Whedoned by the end of Serenity! Whatever ‘verse we returned to, it wouldn’t be the same no matter what. Is it better to bask in the glory that was or crowdfund what might be? We’ll have to wait and see. But just the possibility? Shiny!

I would absolutely love it if he decides to make a Firefly movie. There was an uproar when the show was cancelled – so hopefully we’ll hear good news soon!
I would always love more Firefly! But I do know Joss is a busy guy these days as is most of the cast. I’m with you though – would love to see Serenity fly again!
